My Voice Counts

In spring 2025, we launched a project to hear directly from young people with autism about their experiences of using local health and care services.

We wanted to understand how these services are working for them, what challenges they face, and how support can be improved. The aim was to ensure their voices help shape future services that are more inclusive, accessible and responsive.

We worked closely with Alderwasley Hall School and Sixth Form to co-design a simple, picture-based survey that felt informal and easy to use. The young people shared their views on GP surgeries, dental care, hospitals and opticians, as well as other services like mental health support.

Key findings:

  • Many young people did not feel listened to by health professionals, particularly within mental health services like CAMHS
  • There was a clear sense that health and care services don’t always understand autism, which creates barriers to access and the quality of care
  • Dental and optician services were generally viewed positively, with examples of good practice like sensory adjustments and clear communication
  • Long waits, poor communication, and lack of tailored support made it harder for young people to access mental health care
  • Young people want to be involved in their own health decisions, and be supported to be more independent

What happens next?

Feedback from the young people has been shared with commissioners and service providers across Derbyshire. A poster will be displayed at Alderwasley Hall School to show how their feedback is being used. Local mental health leads have already committed to improving autism awareness, training for staff, and reducing waiting times.

This project is part of our wider work to make sure the voices of young people, especially those with additional needs, are heard, valued and acted upon.
